How We Test and Rank Video Chat Platforms

Every platform on ExpertCamRating goes through the same six-step audit on a fresh signup with a clean payment instrument. Here's exactly what we run, in order.

The five criteria

Every platform is scored 1–5 stars on each of the following. The overall score (out of 10) is the doubled mean.

1. Free chat reality. Whether public rooms are genuinely watchable in full quality without an account, without a phone-number wall, and without time-out. Platforms that gate audio, blur video, or force signup before anything plays drop two ranks regardless of polish.
2. Live broadcaster count during US 9–11pm ET. Self-reported "10,000 models" almost never matches reality. We hit each site three times during a Thursday-night peak and count broadcasters with audio + video flowing. Variance between claimed and observed is sometimes 4×.
3. Bitrate, framerate, audio sync, mobile codec. 1080p60 is now table stakes for the top tier. We measure with browser devtools and a calibrated network throttle. No "looks fine" judgements — actual numbers, written down.
4. Billing privacy. The literal billing-descriptor string the operator submits to the card processor (we save a screenshot from the test card statement). Crypto support, gift-card top-ups, refund window. This is where the bottom half of the industry quietly falls apart.
5. Mobile experience. Responsive web vs PWA vs native. Almost no major cam site ships an App Store app — iOS forbids the category. We test on a 390 × 844 iPhone simulator and a 412 × 900 Pixel; sites that don't reflow tip menus at 390px lose at least one star.

The six-step audit

1. What's free, what's paywall theatre. Test in incognito with no signup. Time how long until a hard wall blocks playback.
2. Live count during peak. Three pings on a Thursday night, count broadcasters with audio + video flowing. Compare to the home-page badge.
3. Video quality measurement. Browser devtools network throttle. Resolution, framerate, bitrate, audio sync.
4. Payment journey. Real card. Buy the smallest token bundle. Capture the descriptor. Test refund.
5. Mobile reflow. Tip menus, chat input, video orientation lock at 390px and 412px viewports.
6. Compliance check. Pull the platform's 2257 / age-verification page. Note the verification provider. If there's no working DMCA contact, drop two ranks.

How long does each review take?

Approximately ninety hours of hands-on time per platform across an initial review. About thirty hours per re-check (every ninety days). Reviews that have not been re-checked within ninety days have their Freshness sub-score dropped one star until we re-test.

Affiliate relationships

Some platforms we review have an affiliate relationship with us; some do not. Whether or not a platform pays us a commission has zero effect on its score. The criteria above are applied identically to every site, paid or unpaid. We disclose the affiliate status of every linked platform on the relevant review page and at the foot of every page.

What we do not score

• Subjective quality of broadcasters. "Hot models" is not a measurable axis; we don't pretend it is.
• Number of categories advertised. Categories on the home page are marketing copy. We measure live counts, not advertised pools.
• Awards self-claimed by the operator. "Best cam site 2024" stickers from defunct industry publications are not evidence of quality.

Limitations

We test from US and EU IP addresses. Geo-blocked content and region-specific pricing in non-US/EU markets is noted in each review but is not the basis of the score. We do not currently test from APAC or Latin America directly; we cite operator-published pricing for those regions.
